cartoons

What are the greatest cartoons of all time?

Sub-question: Best cartoon intro/theme music?

Now, I haven't been that privileged to watch a whole lot of cartoons in my life, but I'll give it a shot.

1) X-Men, The Animated Series
This is the show that made me think about this topic in the first place. I remember loving watching episodes in the afternoons after school or on Saturdays. And the X-Men theme song is my choice for best intro theme song too. You can't beat that. It just gets me amped up thinking about it. That is going to be stuck in my head all day (da-na-neh-NA-neh-na da-na...)

2) Spider-man - Spider-man is really tied for first on this one. It is so hard to pick one over the other. I went with X-Men as first mostly because of the theme song, but actually watch Spider-man more. Such good afternoon TV. And yes, I am talking about the more recent version, not the 1960s version.

3) Animaniacs - Absolutely classic. Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, not to mention Pinky and the Brain and all the other awesome characters. Also a top nominee for greatest theme song, cause it is so fun and infectious at the same time. And best of all, it is educational. There are so many different layers to the cartoon that a wide age range can find it amusing and entertaining.

4) Transformers - It is hard for me to add this in here, even though I know it deserves to be there. I mean I have watched the cartoons, but I had to do it many many years later. I wasn't cut from the cloth of kids who grew up watching Transformers, unfortunately. So I did have to come back later and watch them for myself and see what all the hype was about. And as expected, I absolutely loved them. Especially Stan Bush's theme song.

5) South Park - I have said it before, and I will say it again. Matt Stone and Trey Parker are geniuses!! they continue to have their finger on the pulse of politics, pop culture, and the media, and make fun of everyone. They obviously have their own personal opinions and beliefs, but the show pushes the envelope and walks the tight line of what is funny and what is offensive. But they always have a point, they always have a moral to the story, and they are always relevant.

6) Family Guy - I know it isn't everyone's favorite, and yes, they say and do a lot of inappropriate things trying to get laughs and attention, but I love the obscure pop culture references, I love the character development, and the slapstick one-liners are priceless.

7) Simpsons - I wasn't really allowed to watch the Simpsons either and am definitely not a die hard fan like some people out there. But you gotta give it some respect, especially if we are talking about the "best" cartoons out there. After going back and watching it later, yes there are parts that are funny, the full-length movie was great, but I think the same old stereotypes and assumptions over and over again get a little old, and a little offensive.

Honorable Mention
Thundercats
Schoolhouse Rock

I wish I had watched these when they came out, because then I am sure they would have made my top picks. But alas, I have only seen a couple here and there and that doesn't really count in my book. And I know enough and have seen enough to know they are great.

I agree with this list though I can never get into South Park; lame I know. Add in Thundercats. Am I a month late?

Nice. Good points Willis. yeah... I couldn't in right conscience add Thundercats in. Not because it isn't amazing, I have heard from many people that they loved it, but when I was a kid I wasn't allowed to watch it. So I don't have the same nostalgic association. I have seen a couple episodes and can see how I would love them if I were a kid growing up in the 80s. Sigh. But I did give them honorable mention.

In my opinion, South Park is brilliant. It was really hard for me to not put it at number 1. I think their satire and creative social commentary are just hilarious and very well done. But, I think I was operating on the theme songs, and the four that are above South Park have awesome intro songs.

And no worries.... post whenever you like!
